19-Year-Old Emirati Mountaineer Fatima Al Awadhi Makes History for the UAE

At just 19 years old, Emirati mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi has achieved another historic milestone for the UAE after becoming the first Emirati to summit Lenin Peak in Kyrgyzstan.

Standing at 7,134 metres, Lenin Peak is one of Central Asia’s most challenging high-altitude mountains. Al Awadhi reached the summit on July 18, 2026, becoming the youngest Arab to reach an elevation above 7,000 metres.

UAE flag reaches Lenin Peak

During the historic ascent, Al Awadhi proudly carried and raised the UAE flag at the summit, marking the first time the national flag has been taken to the top of Lenin Peak.

She completed the climb without supplementary oxygen, facing extreme weather, glaciated terrain and prolonged exposure to high altitude during an expedition that lasted around three weeks.

The achievement represents the highest summit of Al Awadhi’s mountaineering career so far and another major step towards her goal of completing the Seven Summits — the highest mountain on each continent.

A remarkable mountaineering journey

Al Awadhi’s latest accomplishment follows a series of major climbs completed in a remarkably short period.

She became the youngest Emirati to summit Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak at 5,642 metres, in July 2025. Earlier in 2026, she became the youngest Arab to summit Mount Vinson in Antarctica, which rises to 4,892 metres.

She has also successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and Carstensz Pyramid in Oceania, building a growing record across the Seven Summits challenge.

Pursuing the Seven Summits

Al Awadhi has set herself the ambitious goal of completing the Seven Summits before turning 20.

Her long-term ambition extends even further, with plans to pursue the Explorer’s Grand Slam, which combines climbing the Seven Summits with reaching the North and South Poles.

Her mountaineering journey began after she participated in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme. A trek through Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley introduced her to the mountains and inspired her to pursue high-altitude climbing.

Inspiring young Emiratis

Beyond the records, Al Awadhi has become an example of the ambition and determination of the UAE’s young generation.

She has spoken about wanting to encourage young people, particularly young women, to challenge themselves, pursue ambitious goals and believe that difficult circumstances can become a starting point for something greater.

Her achievements also reflect the UAE’s growing presence in international adventure sports and mountaineering.

At 19, Fatima Al Awadhi is continuing to raise the UAE flag on some of the world’s highest peaks — while pursuing a remarkable ambition to complete one of mountaineering’s most prestigious challenges.
