Al Ain is showing how greenery, smart irrigation and climate-conscious landscaping can transform a desert city into a more liveable urban environment — with around 99 million flowers planted across the city each year.
In the heart of the UAE’s desert landscape, Al Ain has built an identity around greenery. Tree-lined avenues, colourful roundabouts, landscaped parks and carefully designed flowerbeds have helped earn the oasis city its reputation as one of the country’s greenest urban centres.
But behind the colourful displays is much more than beautification. Al Ain City Municipality is using landscaping as part of a wider approach to urban sustainability, quality of life and climate-responsive city planning.
At the centre of the programme is an extraordinary figure: approximately 99 million flowers are planted annually across nearly 400,000 square metres of flowerbeds throughout Al Ain.
Millions of Flowers, Planned for Every Season
Maintaining colour throughout the year in one of the world’s hottest climates requires careful planning.
Municipal nurseries produce more than 5.5 million seedlings annually, feeding a landscaping programme that uses around 30 flower species, 40 varieties and 20 different colour shades.
Rather than planting the same varieties throughout the year, the municipality adjusts its programme according to the seasons.
Plants are selected based on several environmental and technical considerations, including:

• Colour density
• Overall appearance
• Water-use efficiency

Smarter Irrigation for a Desert Environment
Growing millions of plants in an arid climate inevitably raises questions about water use.
That is why efficiency plays an important role in the municipality’s landscaping strategy.
Flower varieties are selected partly according to their water requirements, while modern irrigation systems are used alongside organised fertilisation, maintenance and plant-replacement programmes.
Before each new planting cycle, older seasonal plants are removed and flowerbeds are prepared again. Soil is improved, organic fertilisers are added and seedlings produced by municipal nurseries are introduced.
The process demonstrates how large-scale landscaping can be managed systematically rather than simply relying on intensive watering.
Designing With the Climate, Not Against It
One of the most important lessons from Al Ain’s approach is that sustainable landscaping starts with choosing plants suited to local conditions.
Instead of focusing purely on appearance, municipal teams evaluate how different varieties perform under heat, sunlight and local soil conditions.
Some of the flowers used across the city include vinca, petunia, zinnia, lantana, marigold, portulaca, begonia, salvia, gerbera, aster, celosia, geranium, viola, cosmos, sunflower, freesia, chrysanthemum and dahlia, among others.
New varieties are also tested and introduced as landscaping programmes evolve.
Horizontal and Vertical Greenery
Al Ain is increasingly experimenting with different ways to integrate plants into the urban landscape.
Municipal landscaping incorporates both horizontal and vertical planting, along with decorative structures and creative floral installations.
These techniques allow greenery to become part of streetscapes and public spaces where conventional gardens may not always be practical.
The municipality is also expanding the use of modern technologies in irrigation, agricultural management and landscaping design.
Sustainability on Display at Al Ain Flower Festival
The city’s approach was also showcased during the Al Ain Flower Festival 2026.
The festival covered approximately 50,000 square metres, including more than 32,900 square metres of green areas and floral displays.
Around 8 million flowers from 23 species, together with 228 trees and 76 shrubs, featured in environmentally conscious designs intended to combine visual impact with responsible use of natural resources.
The municipality described the event as a practical example of incorporating environmental sustainability into community events.
More Than Beautification
Al Ain’s investment in greenery illustrates a broader shift in how cities think about public landscaping.
Flowers, trees and parks are increasingly considered part of the infrastructure that influences wellbeing, community life, urban identity and environmental quality.
