Time and again, animals that seem pointless, annoying, or even repulsive to us turn out to play essential roles in their ecosystems, as pollinators, pest controllers, clean-up crews, or food for other species. Here are some of the animals most commonly branded useless, and the surprisingly important jobs they actually do.
Mosquitoes

Perhaps the most hated animal on Earth, and the deadliest to humans through diseases like malaria, the mosquito is the classic answer to "most useless animal." Yet mosquitoes are a vital food source for fish, birds, bats, and other insects, and some species act as pollinators for certain plants. Their harm to humans is undeniable, but ecologically they are far from pointless.
Wasps

Often dismissed as aggressive, purposeless pests, wasps are actually important predators that control populations of caterpillars, aphids, and other insects that would otherwise devastate crops. Many species also pollinate flowers, making them quiet but valuable contributors to healthy ecosystems.
Houseflies

Vultures

The idea of a "useless" animal usually says more about human annoyance or misunderstanding than about the creature itself.
