Claude AI Goes Rupee: Anthropic Rolls Out India Pricing Starting at Rs 2,000 a Month

Anthropic has begun rolling out rupee-denominated pricing for its Claude artificial intelligence subscriptions in India, allowing users to view and pay for the service in local currency instead of US dollars. The localized pricing began appearing for users across Claude's website and mobile applications on July 13, covering every subscription tier the company offers.

The move is significant because India accounts for 5.8 percent of global Claude usage, making it the service's second-largest market after the United States, according to Anthropic. Indian users had long sought rupee-denominated subscriptions, with dollar pricing previously forcing them to absorb currency conversion costs, 18 percent GST added on top of advertised prices, and foreign transaction fees charged by banks and credit cards.

What Each Plan Costs

Claude Pro, the core subscription for individual users, is priced at Rs 2,399 per month on monthly billing, falling to an effective Rs 2,000 per month under annual billing, with users paying Rs 24,000 upfront for the year. That compares with $20 monthly or an effective $17 per month on annual billing in the United States. The Pro plan offers roughly five times the usage of the free tier, along with access to Anthropic's advanced models — including Sonnet, Opus, and the new Fable 5 — plus Research mode, unlimited Projects, memory, web search, and Claude Code.

Claude Max, aimed at power users needing higher limits and longer working sessions, comes in two variants: Max 5x at Rs 11,999 per month and Max 20x at Rs 23,999 per month, both billed monthly. The plans were previously billed at $100 and $200 respectively. Max 5x provides five times the usage of Pro, while Max 20x offers 20 times the Pro allowance per rolling five-hour session, along with higher output limits, priority access during heavy traffic, and earlier access to advanced features.

For organisations, the Claude Team plan — designed for teams of five to 150 users — costs Rs 2,399 per user per month on annual billing, or Rs 2,999 per user per month on monthly billing. Enterprise subscriptions remain available separately, with pricing determined by seats and usage. Claude's free plan continues to be available in India at no cost, offering access across web, desktop, iOS, and Android, with tools for writing, coding, web search, file creation, and data visualisation, subject to usage limits.

One Notable Gap: No UPI Support Yet

While users can now see subscription prices in rupees, Anthropic has not yet enabled payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's dominant instant payments network that processes billions of transactions monthly. Website subscriptions currently require a credit or debit card, while mobile app subscriptions use Apple's and Google's billing systems. That stands in contrast to OpenAI, which rolled out rupee pricing for ChatGPT with UPI support.

Part of a Deepening India Push

The pricing rollout caps a period of rapid Indian expansion for Anthropic. The company opened its Bengaluru office in February 2026 and appointed former Microsoft India Managing Director Irina Ghose to lead its operations in the country. It has also partnered with Indian IT services giants Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services to scale enterprise AI deployments, and says its India run-rate revenue has doubled since it first announced expansion plans in October 2025.

Claude usage in India skews heavily toward professional and technical work: software-related tasks account for 45.2 percent of the country's occupationally mapped Claude activity — the highest proportion among markets Anthropic has studied. The expansion did face a brief setback in June, when Anthropic temporarily suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-US entities; access to Fable 5 has since been restored, though some restrictions on Mythos 5 remain.

A Competitive Market

Anthropic's localisation follows a playbook already run by rivals. OpenAI has localized ChatGPT pricing in India with UPI support, while Google's Gemini benefits from deep integration with the Android devices that dominate India's smartphone market. By removing payment friction for one of the world's largest developer bases, Anthropic is betting that rupee pricing will convert a significant pool of Indian users who had previously been deterred by dollar billing — even as the missing UPI option leaves one notable gap in the rollout.
