Emirates ID Expiring Soon? What Should You Do First?

If your Emirates ID is approaching its expiry date, the most important thing is not to wait until the last minute. For UAE residents, Emirates ID renewal is closely linked to residence permit renewal, and delays can eventually result in daily fines.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) allows non-UAE nationals to renew their Emirates ID when less than six months remain before expiry. UAE citizens have a longer early-renewal window of up to one year. 

Here is what UAE residents should check first.

1. Check Your Emirates ID Expiry Date

Start by checking the expiry date printed on your Emirates ID or through your digital government records.

For expatriate residents, the Emirates ID is tied to the validity of the residence permit, so in many cases both renewal procedures move together.

ICP states that residence permit renewal is linked to an Emirates ID card application, with the ID issued after the residence renewal is approved. 

If your ID is expiring soon, contact your employer, sponsor or relevant HR team early if they are responsible for your residency.

2. Residents Can Start Up to Six Months Before Expiry

For UAE residents and GCC nationals, Emirates ID renewal can generally be initiated when the card has less than six months remaining.

This gives residents enough time to check their passport, residence status and other requirements before the actual expiry date. 

Do not confuse this with the newer one-year early-renewal rule. That change, effective from July 14, 2026, applies specifically to UAE citizens. 

3. Check Your Passport Before Starting

Your passport is an important part of the renewal process.

ICP currently states that, for Emirates ID renewal, the passport must have at least three months of validity remaining. 

If your passport is also close to expiring, deal with that issue early rather than waiting until your residency renewal is due.

This is especially important for expatriates whose residence permit and Emirates ID renewal may depend on valid passport details.

4. Check Your Residence Visa Status

For expatriates, Emirates ID renewal is generally not a completely separate process from residency.

ICP describes residence renewal as a service that renews a residence permit linked to an Emirates ID application. 

For most emirates, ICP says the Emirates ID renewal application is submitted together with the residence application through the unified residence and identity form. Dubai follows its own immigration processing arrangements. 

So if your Emirates ID is expiring because your residence visa is also expiring, simply trying to renew the physical card alone will not solve the issue.

5. Complete Your Medical Fitness Test if Required

Residence renewal for many adult expatriates requires a valid medical fitness result.

ICP states that completing the residence and Emirates ID renewal process can require the necessary approvals and a “fit” result from the medical examination. 

Depending on your visa category, sponsor and emirate, additional requirements may also apply.

6. You May Need New Biometrics or a New Photo

People who have completed 15 years of age may be required to complete fingerprint and signature procedures through an ICP service centre. 

ICP also currently requires a recent personal photograph for the renewal application.

If the system requests biometrics, updated documents or another correction, complete the requirement promptly because applications can be cancelled when required procedures are not completed within the specified period. 

7. Where Can You Renew Your Emirates ID?

ICP offers several renewal channels, including:

•    ICP Smart Services website 
•    UAEICP mobile application 
•    ICP Customer Happiness Centres 
•    Other authorised service channels 
The service is available online around the clock through ICP’s digital platforms. 

For Dubai residents, immigration-related residence procedures are handled through Dubai’s relevant residency authority, while Emirates ID issuance remains part of the UAE identity system.

8. What Happens if Your Emirates ID Expires?

There is a 30-day grace period after the Emirates ID expires to complete renewal procedures.

After that period, ICP imposes a late-renewal fine of:

AED 20 per day
up to a maximum of:
AED 1,000. 
This means residents should not interpret the grace period as a reason to delay renewal. It is designed as a limited period to complete the process after expiry.

9. Can You Get an Exemption From the Late Fine?

ICP provides a service for requesting an exemption from administrative delay fees in cases covered by approved exemption decisions. 

An exemption is not automatic and depends on the individual circumstances and eligibility rules.

If you believe your renewal was delayed for an exceptional reason, check directly with ICP rather than assuming you will have to pay or that the fine will automatically be removed.

10. Don't Forget to Update Your Personal Details

Your responsibility does not end with renewing the card.

ICP says changes to prescribed personal or civil information must generally be reported within 30 days. Delays can result in fines of AED 20 per day, up to AED 1,000. 

Phone number, email and address can also be updated through ICP’s data-update services.

Keeping your registered mobile number current is particularly useful because government notifications and authentication services may depend on it.

What if Your Emirates ID Is Lost Near the Expiry Date?

If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, do not simply wait for the renewal date.

The UAE Government advises residents to request a replacement and, in the case of loss, report it to ICP within seven days. 

If the ID is already close to expiry, check with ICP whether renewal or replacement is the appropriate procedure for your case.

A Simple Renewal Checklist

Before your Emirates ID expires, check:

Emirates ID expiry date
Residence permit expiry date
Passport validity
Medical fitness requirement
Employer or sponsor renewal status
Current photograph and biometrics if requested
Registered mobile number and personal details
Getting these items ready early can prevent unnecessary delays.

Employer-Sponsored Residents: Contact HR Early

For many private-sector employees, the employer handles the residence renewal process.

If your Emirates ID has only a few weeks left, ask HR:

•    Has my residence renewal started? 
•    Is my medical fitness test required? 
•    Do you need my original passport or updated passport copy? 
•    Is any new photograph or document required? 
•    When should I expect the renewed Emirates ID? 

Do not assume the company has already started the process simply because your visa is employer-sponsored.

Family-Sponsored Residents Should Check the Sponsor's Status Too

If your spouse, parent or another family member sponsors your residence, the sponsor's residence status may affect dependent renewals.

Make sure the sponsor's documents are valid and that any required family-sponsorship conditions remain satisfied before beginning the dependent's renewal.

Can You Use Your Emirates ID After It Expires?

An expired Emirates ID can cause practical problems because the card is widely used for identity verification across government and private-sector services.

It may affect transactions involving banks, telecom services, insurance, government platforms and other services requiring valid identity information.

That is another reason to start renewal before expiry rather than waiting for the grace period.

For expatriate residents:

You can generally start within six months of expiry.

The safest approach is simple: start early, keep your documents valid and follow up with your employer or sponsor before the expiry date arrives.
