Indian expats gather for flag-hoisting in Dubai

Hundreds of members of the Indian community gathered at the Indian Consulate in Dubai on Saturday morning to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day, turning the occasion into a vibrant display of patriotism, unity and cultural pride.

Large Turnout at Indian Consulate

The consulate auditorium was filled with residents, families, children and senior members of the Indian community. Many attendees stood throughout the programme after seating areas reached capacity.

Children as young as five arrived with their parents, carrying small Indian flags, while many residents wore traditional Indian clothing, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Tricolour Hoisted Amid Cheers

Outside the consulate, hundreds gathered around the flagpole for the Independence Day ceremony. As the Indian Tricolour was hoisted, attendees saluted the flag, while others captured the memorable moment on their phones.

The ceremony brought together Indians from different states, communities and generations, highlighting the strong sense of unity within the UAE's Indian diaspora.

‘We Come Together as Indians’

Mohammed Masiuddin, one of the founders of the Telugu Association in Dubai, said Independence Day provides an opportunity for Indians from different backgrounds to come together.

He noted that despite living abroad for many years, members of the Indian community continue to maintain a strong connection with their homeland.

Masiuddin also highlighted the presence of young children, saying such celebrations help them understand their heritage and maintain a connection with India.

Hundreds Attend on Saturday Morning

Hameed Yasin, secretary of Iman Cultural Centre, described the turnout as a strong demonstration of community unity.

He said families could have spent their Saturday morning at home, but instead chose to attend the celebrations. The gathering included children, young adults, families and elderly residents.

Yasin added that Independence Day events help younger generations understand the significance of freedom and the sacrifices made during India's independence struggle.

Passing the Spirit to the Next Generation

For Ashish, a JLT resident who attended with his family, the celebration was an opportunity for his children to experience Independence Day firsthand.
He said watching the flag being hoisted among hundreds of Indians created a special experience that was different from simply learning about the occasion at school.
