Mollywood Onam 2026: Khalifa and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Lead the Festive Box Office

KERALA — Onam is traditionally one of the biggest theatrical seasons for Malayalam cinema, and 2026 is shaping up around two major releases with very different flavours. Prithviraj Sukumaran’s big-budget action thriller Khalifa is scheduled to open on August 20, while Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit follows on August 21.

The festive lineup had previously appeared set for an even larger three-way clash, but Dulquer Salmaan’s I’m Game, which was originally dated for August 20, has now been moved to September 3 as the makers prepare a wider multilingual theatrical rollout.

Khalifa — August 20, 2026

Khalifa is the action-heavy option of the Onam season. Directed by Vysakh and written by Jinu V Abraham, the film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as Aamir Ali in a story built around gold smuggling, revenge, family legacy and power.

The film has been promoted on a large international canvas, with Dubai forming an important part of its setting. Mohanlal appears as Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, adding further star power to one of the most anticipated Malayalam action releases of the year.

Khalifa is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on August 20, positioning it as the first major Mollywood title to enter the 2026 Onam box-office race.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit — August 21, 2026

A day later, the mood changes from action to romance and comedy with Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. The film brings Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju together for the first time under the direction of Girish A.D., whose previous films include Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, Super Sharanya and the blockbuster Premalu.

The romantic comedy is produced by Bhavana Studios and features a large supporting cast including Sangeeth Prathap, Vinay Forrt, Suresh Krishna, Bindu Panicker, Shyam Mohan and others.

With its lighter tone, family-friendly appeal and a director strongly associated with contemporary Malayalam comedy and romance, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit offers a clear alternative to Khalifa’s large-scale action.

What Happened to Dulquer Salmaan’s I’m Game?

I’m Game had initially been announced for August 20, which would have put Dulquer Salmaan directly against Prithviraj Sukumaran during the Onam period. The release has since been postponed to September 3, 2026.

The film, directed by Nahas Hidhayath and also starring Kayadu Lohar, is now expected to receive a broader theatrical rollout in five languages. Its move leaves Khalifa and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit as the two headline Malayalam releases currently confirmed for the core Onam weekend.

Onam 2026 Mollywood Release Calendar

•    August 20 — Khalifa: Prithviraj Sukumaran, directed by Vysakh — Action/Crime Thriller
•    August 21 — Bethlehem Kudumba Unit: Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, directed by Girish A.D. — Romantic Comedy
•    September 3 — I’m Game: Dulquer Salmaan and Kayadu Lohar, directed by Nahas Hidhayath — postponed from its original August 20 date

Action vs Romance at the Onam Box Office

The two main Onam releases are targeting audiences with noticeably different experiences. Khalifa is positioned as a large-scale crime-action spectacle, while Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is aiming for audiences looking for romance, humour and a more relaxed festive watch.

That contrast could allow both films to attract their own audiences during a period when families and moviegoers traditionally turn out strongly for Malayalam cinema.

Strong Interest Expected in the Gulf

Onam Malayalam releases also attract significant attention across the Gulf, including Qatar and the UAE, where large Malayali communities regularly support major opening-weekend releases. Khalifa’s Dubai-linked setting and the popularity of Prithviraj, Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju are likely to add to interest among GCC moviegoers.

Which Film Will Win Onam 2026?

With I’m Game moving to September, the immediate festive contest has become a two-film battle between Khalifa and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. One offers star-driven action and spectacle; the other brings together a fresh lead pairing with the director of Premalu.

The final box-office outcome will depend on audience response after release, but the contrasting genres mean Onam moviegoers may ultimately choose to watch both.
