Muharram to begin June 16 as UAE declares start of Islamic year 1448 AH
The UAE's Fatwa Council has considered Tuesday, June 16 as the first day of Muharram and hence the Islamic New Year 1448 AH. This announcement comes after studying scientific data related to the sighting of the crescent moon with its specialized scientific bodies and observatories in various parts of the country, according to where it was announced.
As per the earlier announcement, UAE Astronomy Centre also confirmed that moon was spotted in the skies of Abu Dhabi during daytime by Khatm Astronomical Observatory. The Hijri calendar is based on the lunar cycle; months last (on average) either 29 or 30 days, and the Islamic New Year commences with seeing in the Muharram crescent.
Long Weekend for UAE Residents
The UAE celebrated the new Islamic year with an added public holiday on Monday, June 15, giving some residents a long weekend.

People watching Saturday and Sunday weekends had a three day holiday.
Because the emirate follows a Friday-Saturday-Sunday weekend schedule, government employees and students in Sharjah had a four-day break.

The Fatwa Council prayed for the UAE's continuous prosperity, security and stability as part of its announcement. The council prayed for the protection and success of President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, adding wishes that this year will be blessed, prosperous and may it boosts more well being for the nation and all its residents.
