No mirrors, no lights: Dubai gym launches workout class in complete darkness
Dubai residents can now experience a different approach to fitness with a new workout class that takes place entirely in the dark.
GymNation has launched “Dans le Noir: Class in the Dark,” a 45-minute fitness experience designed to help participants focus on body movement rather than appearance, mirrors or visual distractions.
A Workout Without Mirrors or Screens
The new fitness concept removes common visual elements associated with traditional gym sessions. Participants complete their workout without mirrors, screens, phones or other visual distractions.
The aim is to create an environment where participants can concentrate on how their bodies feel and move without worrying about how they look or comparing themselves with others.
Grounding Exercises Before the Lights Go Out
Before the room becomes completely dark, participants complete a short grounding sequence.
The preparation includes:
Balance exercises
Joint mobilisation
Proprioceptive activation
This initial sequence helps participants prepare to move safely and confidently once they can no longer rely on their vision.
Functional Training and Breathwork in the Dark
During the 45-minute session, participants wear weighted vests and wrist weights while performing functional movements, strength exercises and breathwork.
Instructions and music are delivered through wireless headphones, allowing participants to follow the session without relying on visual cues.
The instructor is the only person able to see inside the room. Using night vision goggles, the instructor can move around the space and monitor participants throughout the workout.
Addressing Fear of Judgement at the Gym
According to GymNation’s 2026 Fitness Report, 47% of respondents identified fear of judgement as the main barrier preventing them from joining or returning to a gym.
GymNation said the dark-room format is designed to reduce some of this pressure by removing the ability to see and compare oneself with other participants.
Proprioception Takes Centre Stage
Sports scientist Aderito Manuel explained that removing visual input encourages the body to rely more heavily on proprioception — the internal sense of position, balance and movement.
He said this can engage stabiliser muscles that may be underused during conventional workouts and encourage a stronger mind-muscle connection.
GymNation Challenges Fitness Culture
Rory McEntee, Chief Marketing Officer at GymNation, said the class was created in response to the increasingly visual nature of modern fitness culture.
The concept removes mirrors, cameras and social media content from the workout environment, allowing participants to focus solely on their movement and performance.
Class Dates at GymNation MotorCity
The Dans le Noir: Class in the Dark sessions will be held at GymNation MotorCity in Dubai at 8:30am on:
September 6
September 13
September 20
September 27
Each session has limited capacity, and advance registration is required.
What Participants Need to Know
Participants will be provided with the required weighted equipment, dumbbells and wireless headphones during the class.
To maintain the distraction-free experience, phones, cameras and photography will not be permitted inside the workout space.
The new concept offers Dubai residents an alternative way to exercise, encouraging them to focus less on appearance and more on movement, strength, balance and body awareness.
