Precast concrete work begins for Dubai Loop tunnel Phase 1, weighing 100 million pounds

Dubai has officially begun precast concrete operations for the first phase of the highly anticipated Dubai Loop, an underground transportation system being developed in partnership with Elon Musk's The Boring Company (TBC). The project aims to transform urban mobility by providing fast, seamless travel through a network of one-directional underground tunnels.

According to The Boring Company, the first tunnel will weigh an impressive 100 million pounds (45.3 million kg) and will be built using 25,000 precast concrete segments, each weighing approximately 4,000 pounds.

Dubai Becomes the Second City to Introduce the Loop

Following the success of the Las Vegas Loop, Dubai has become the second city in the world to adopt this innovative underground transportation concept, often described as "Teslas in tunnels."

The project is designed to offer:

The passenger tunnel project officially moved forward after Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) signed an agreement with The Boring Company during the World Government Summit 2026.

The partnership marks another major step in Dubai's vision of becoming one of the world's smartest and most technologically advanced cities.

First Phase: Four Stations Across Key Business Districts

The pilot phase will cover 4 miles (6.4 km) and feature four underground stations, connecting some of Dubai's busiest commercial and tourism destinations.

Planned Stations:

• Burj Khalifa

• DIFC 2

• Zabeel Dubai Mall Parking

• ICD Brookfield Place

This initial section will create a direct connection between Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Dubai Mall, significantly reducing travel times for commuters and visitors.

Future Expansion to 19 Stations

After the successful completion of the first phase, the Dubai Loop will expand into a much larger underground transport network.

The future expansion includes:

Extending the route to 14 miles (22.5 km)
Increasing the network to 19 stations
Connecting the Dubai World Trade Centre, Business Bay, and the wider financial district

The first phase is expected to cost around Dh600 million and be completed within one year, while the complete project is estimated at Dh2.5 billion with an overall construction timeline of approximately three years.

Dubai Loop Expected to Reduce Traffic and Travel Time

One of the project's biggest advantages will be its ability to reduce traffic congestion across central Dubai.

Key projections include:

• Around 13,000 passengers per day during the first phase

• Capacity increasing to 30,000 passengers daily after full expansion

• Travel times reduced from 20 minutes to just 3 minutes

These improvements are expected to make daily commuting significantly faster while supporting Dubai's growing population and business activity.
