UAE Marks 60 Years Since Sheikh Zayed Assumed Leadership of Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: The UAE is commemorating 60 years since the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan assumed leadership of Abu Dhabi on August 6, 1966, a defining moment that helped shape the future of the emirate and ultimately paved the way for the establishment of the United Arab Emirates.

Sheikh Zayed’s accession as Ruler of Abu Dhabi marked the beginning of a transformative period driven by an ambitious vision for development, unity and prosperity. His leadership would go on to reshape Abu Dhabi and play a decisive role in bringing together the emirates to establish the UAE in 1971.

A Turning Point in Abu Dhabi’s History

When Sheikh Zayed assumed leadership in 1966, Abu Dhabi was at the beginning of a period of rapid economic and social change.

He recognised that the emirate’s growing resources could be used to build a modern society and improve people’s lives. Under his leadership, major investment was directed towards essential infrastructure and public services, including schools, hospitals, housing, roads, electricity and water.

He became the country’s Founding Father and first President, a position he held until his passing in 2004.

The country continues to pursue ambitious goals in economic diversification, sustainability, technology and human development while maintaining a strong emphasis on tolerance, humanitarian action and cultural heritage.
