UAE pension scheme extends coverage to part-time Emirati employees
The UAE's General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) has expanded pension coverage to part-time Emirati employees working in government and private sector entities.
The move reflects the UAE's evolving labour market and the growing adoption of flexible working arrangements, including on-site, remote and hybrid employment.
Part-Time Employees Eligible for Pension Coverage
Under the new framework, UAE nationals working part-time can be registered in the GPSSA pension system if they work between eight and 32 hours per week.
Employees working between one and four days per week can also qualify, with working hours equivalent to 20% to 80% of full-time employment.
Pension Benefits Calculated Proportionately
For eligible part-time employees, the period of service and pension benefits will be calculated proportionately.
The calculation will be based on the employee's actual working hours and the approved contribution salary applicable during each period of employment.
This ensures that pension entitlements reflect the individual's part-time working arrangement.
Employers Responsible for Registration
GPSSA said employers are responsible for registering UAE national part-time employees under the pension system.
Employers must also update employee records through the Ma'ashi platform when an insured full-time employee changes to a part-time contract.
Greater Flexibility for Emirati Workers
According to GPSSA, expanding social security coverage across different employment arrangements gives insured individuals greater flexibility in managing their professional and personal responsibilities.
The framework can support employees who choose part-time work to accommodate further education, family responsibilities or other personal commitments.
Continuity of Pension Service
The authority also highlighted that the framework supports continuity of service for employees who move between full-time and part-time employment.
By maintaining social security coverage across different work arrangements, the system aims to provide Emirati employees with greater long-term financial and social security while supporting the UAE's increasingly flexible labour market.
