Uganda VP Hails China-Backed Agro-Industrial Park as Catalyst for Agricultural Transformation

Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo has praised the China-Uganda Agricultural Cooperation Industrial Park in Luwero as a major driver of the country’s shift toward modern, commercial agriculture. During an assessment tour on Thursday, Alupo said the park is accelerating Uganda’s transition from traditional subsistence farming to high value agro industrial production, positioning the sector for stronger economic growth. 

A Strategic Push Toward Modern Agribusiness

Alupo described the visit as a “concrete demonstration” of Uganda’s commitment to targeted agro industrialization, emphasizing that the government’s strategic goal is to build a commercialized, export oriented agricultural sector. The industrial park—developed under China Uganda cooperation—has become a central hub for agro processing, value addition, and technology transfer.

South–South Cooperation Delivering Results

The Vice President’s remarks come amid broader recognition of China’s role in Uganda’s agricultural transformation. The FAO China Uganda South–South Cooperation project, which recently concluded Phase III, has directly benefited over 100,000 farmers through technology transfer, training, and improved production systems. Officials say the partnership is setting a global benchmark for agrifood transformation. 

Industrial Park Driving Innovation and Expansion

The China Uganda Agricultural Cooperation Industrial Park has also been credited with major investments in crop diversification and export focused farming. Recent initiatives include a 2026 chili farming expansion plan targeting more than 2,000 acres, aimed at boosting farmer incomes and strengthening Uganda’s agricultural exports to China. 

Technology Transfer Strengthening Local Capacity

Ugandan and Chinese officials highlight that the park’s success is rooted in practical technology transfer—from improved crop varieties to modern processing techniques. Millet varieties showcased during recent project events demonstrate how Chinese expertise is enhancing Uganda’s agricultural productivity and resilience. 

High-Level Endorsements

Senior Ugandan leaders, including First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, have commended the park’s decade-long impact, noting its role in job creation, rural development, and strengthening Uganda–China economic ties.
