US and Iran Reach Peace Deal; Hormuz Strait Set to Reopen on June 19
Former US President Donald Trump claims that the USA and Iran have finally brokered a historic peace deal, stating that in light of today's signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during negotiations, The United States-based strategic Strait of Hormuz will be reopened to trade on June 19. The details of the draft agreement under which Iran promised not to develop or obtain a nuclear bomb, while the United States vowed not to introduce new sanctions until an agreement is fully concluded.
The Iranian National Security Council confirmed on June 19 that the agreement was ready for signature, and Qatari negotiators are said to have flown to Tehran to finalize it. After the unfreezing of Iranian assets and lifting the naval blockade, there will be a 60 days negotiation period, Iranian officials said.
Regionally, tensions are still high as Israel said it had targeted Hezbollah positions in southern suburbs of Beirut. Iran promised revenge, and Trump called for everyone to stand down, saying on Friday that the strike “should not have happened.” Pakistan's Prime Minister similarly stated there was a peace deal between the US and Iran, perhaps giving greater credibility in terms of stability for that region.
