WhatsApp will allow users to go by usernames instead of phone numbers
WhatsApp is set to roll out a major privacy update later this year, allowing users to connect using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers. The feature is designed to enhance user privacy by making usernames the primary way for people to find and contact each other for the first time.
The messaging platform, which serves more than 3 billion users worldwide, has already opened username reservations ahead of the official launch. According to WhatsApp, users will soon be able to choose to be contacted through their username, while keeping their phone number private.
A Major Privacy Upgrade
The new username feature aims to close one of WhatsApp's biggest privacy gaps. Instead of giving out a phone number, users can simply share their unique username to start conversations.
Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's Vice President of Product, described the feature as a "core privacy feature," adding that:
Users will be contacted through their exact username.
There will be no searchable username directory.
WhatsApp will not suggest usernames while users are typing.
Username Reservations Now Open
To help users secure their preferred names, WhatsApp has started allowing username reservations before the feature officially launches.
Usernames must:
Be between 3 and 35 characters.
Be unique to each user.
Follow WhatsApp's naming guidelines.
The company expects many users to reserve their desired usernames early, especially those looking for short or memorable handles.
Special Protection for Public Figures
To reduce the risk of impersonation, WhatsApp will reserve usernames for:
Celebrities
Public figures
Government entities
Verified organizations
Additionally, businesses, creators, and organizations with existing Instagram or Facebook accounts will have the opportunity to claim matching usernames on WhatsApp.
What This Means for Users
Currently, anyone with your phone number can message you on WhatsApp. Once the new feature rolls out, users will have the option to keep their phone number private and connect through usernames instead, offering greater control over personal information and improving privacy across the platform.
