Worried about WhatsApp username safety? Meta responds to concerns
Meta promises no impersonation, spam or random messages whenever WhatsApp launches its long-expected username feature Although users can now book their usernames, they still won't be able to use them in messages; that feature hasn't been turned on yet and is said to arrive in phases later this year.
The feature is aimed at addressing privacy concerns by letting people connect without having to share their phone numbers, while also safeguarding against misuse, the company said.

Meta announced that users will get more detail whenever someone first gets in touch through a username. This context should guide users about whether to respond to an unknown sender.
The safety details will include:

If both users are in any WhatsApp group.

Strong Measures to Prevent Impersonation
Meta has also been reserving usernames related to notable people and bodies from falling in the hands of fake accounts. These usernames also can only be claimed by their rightful owners,

It has also banned the replica accounts of popular usernames to limit enacting scammers.
Multiple Layers of Scam Protection
WhatsApp usernames will include several security protections to combat abuse and fraudulent activity, Meta said.

In its announcement, the company confirmed that WhatsApp will still require a telephone number to use, even when usernames become available.
Privacy Benefits and Remaining Concerns
Usernames, which are meant to enhance user privacy by allowing people to connect without exchanging phone numbers. Cybersecurity experts, however, are warning scammers may still try to create names similar to firms, banks, customer services hotlines or couriers or even public figures.
However, Meta's new protections aim to mitigate some of these threats and users are reminded to remain vigilant when receiving messages from unfamiliar accounts and always verify identity before sharing any personal or financial details.

Meta is refining its security measures ahead of the feature's global rollout; expect username features to be available later this year. Once the feature is rolled out, users can avail of better privacy at the same time as they have even more robust anti-scam and impersonation measures.
