Passing through immigration at Dubai’s airports is becoming increasingly contactless, with biometric Smart Gates capable of recognising registered travellers by their face and completing passport-control procedures within seconds.

For many passengers travelling through Dubai, reaching for a passport at immigration is increasingly becoming unnecessary.

Dubai’s biometric immigration system can identify eligible, registered travellers using facial and other biometric data, allowing them to pass through Smart Gates simply by looking toward the camera.

Dubai Airports says registered Smart Gate users can pass through passport control by looking at the green light without scanning a travel document, with the process typically completed within seconds.

Your Face Can Effectively Become Your Travel ID

Dubai’s General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, or GDRFA Dubai, has spent years developing biometric border-control technology.

Its systems link a traveller’s biometric profile with information already held in immigration databases.

When an eligible passenger approaches a Smart Gate, cameras verify the traveller’s identity against those records.

GDRFA has previously described the concept as allowing a traveller’s facial biometric profile to act like a passport through Dubai’s ports.

How Do Dubai Smart Gates Work?

The experience is designed to be simple.

A registered passenger enters the Smart Gate, stands in the designated position and looks toward the green light.

The biometric system then checks the traveller’s identity against immigration records.

Dubai Airports advises passengers to remove items that could obstruct facial recognition, such as:

Who Can Use Dubai Smart Gates?

Not every traveller automatically qualifies.

According to current Dubai Airports guidance, Smart Gates can be used by eligible registered travellers including:

•    GCC nationals
•    UAE residents
•    Eligible visa-on-arrival visitors with biometric passports
•    Certain returning tourists with biometric passports
Travellers generally need to be at least 1.2 metres tall to use the service.

Families travelling with children, passengers with large strollers and some other categories may instead be directed to staffed immigration counters.

Dubai Airports also offers a Smart Gate PreCheck facility so travellers can determine whether they are eligible before travelling.

First-Time Travellers May Need Registration

Facial recognition works because the system already has verified biometric information associated with the traveller.

Dubai Airports says first-time Smart Gate users can be registered when they reach the passport-control touchpoint on arrival at Dubai International Airport (DXB) or Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).

Once registered and eligible, subsequent journeys can become considerably faster.

Emirates Has Expanded Facial Recognition Across Terminal 3

The biometric experience goes beyond immigration for some Emirates passengers.

In late 2025, Emirates announced an AED 85 million investment in more than 200 biometric-enabled cameras across Terminal 3 at DXB.

Registered Emirates customers can use facial recognition at multiple points including:

•    Check-in
•    Immigration
•    Boarding gates
•    Emirates lounges
•    Aircraft boarding

The cameras can identify a registered customer’s biometric profile from around one metre away, reducing the need to repeatedly present passports and boarding passes.

Emirates customers can register for biometric services through the Emirates app, airport self-service kiosks or check-in desks.

Immigration Without Repeatedly Showing Documents

The underlying idea is a seamless passenger journey.

Traditionally, an international traveller might have to show a passport and boarding pass several times between entering the airport and boarding an aircraft.

Biometric systems aim to replace some of these repeated checks with a secure identity match.

Once the traveller’s identity has been verified and connected with the relevant travel record, facial recognition can confirm that the person standing at the gate is the same passenger authorised to travel.

GDRFA says Dubai’s entry and departure systems increasingly use artificial intelligence and Smart Gates to allow eligible passengers to complete procedures without human intervention.

More Than 26 Million Smart Gate Transactions

The technology is already being used on a huge scale.

GDRFA’s published 2025 open data records 26.37 million Smart Gate transactions during the year.

Earlier GDRFA figures showed Smart Gate usage growing from around 5.7 million passengers in 2017 to more than 21 million in 2023.

The rapid increase demonstrates how biometric processing has shifted from being a niche airport service to a major part of Dubai’s border-control infrastructure.

Dubai Has Now Introduced Mobile Immigration Too

Dubai is also experimenting with moving immigration processing beyond fixed counters and gates.

On September 7, 2026, GDRFA launched “Click & Travel,” which it describes as the world’s first mobile service allowing immigration officers to complete entry and departure procedures at a passenger’s location inside the airport.

The system uses mobile devices connected directly with GDRFA databases and incorporates biometric identity verification.

GDRFA says a transaction can be completed in approximately 12 to 15 seconds.

More than 31,000 transactions had already been completed during pilot operations between May and August 31, 2026.

The service is particularly intended for peak travel periods, emergencies and situations in which moving immigration services directly to passengers can improve airport flow.

Why Is Dubai Investing So Heavily in Biometrics?

DXB handles tens of millions of international passengers every year.

Traditional border control depends heavily on passport inspection and manual processing, which can create long queues when several large flights arrive simultaneously.

Is Facial Recognition Secure?

Dubai authorities say biometric verification is integrated with official immigration databases and used to confirm a passenger’s identity and travel eligibility.

Biometrics can also provide stronger identity verification than simply presenting a document because the system is checking whether the person at the gate matches the identity stored in official records.

However, the technology does not mean passports have disappeared.
